Day 3

Table Mountain was covered with clouds, so we headed off for a Township Tour with Rev. Rose.  We stopped first at the site of District 6, then travelled several miles to the Cape Flats, where residents were relocated.  Our visit to the townships started in Langa with a visit to the community center - wonderful pottery, beadwork, and wood carving - and a performance by young musicians on homemade drums and wooden xylophones.  One of the community center directors than took us to visit the homes of some Langa residents, and helped us understand the challenges of providing adequate housing in the townships, as well as the importance of the upcoming municipal elections.  We also made stops in Khayelitsha (the largest African township) and Mitchell's Plain (the largest Coloured township).  After lunch, we visited the Slave Museum, and enjoyed a hands-on walking tour and presentation on slavery and the creation of South African racial classifications, led by Lucy Campbell.
